We would like to announce a Victory for some of our furry & feathered friends! Just 2 nights ago, after 6 years in the making, the Senate has passed The Animal Fighting & Prohibition Enforcement Act, the President is expected to sign. This will establish tougher, felony level penalties relating to animal fighting (dog fighting, cockfighting, etc)! The Humane Society of the United States, along with their supporters, have worked hard to "help" make this happen! Please support the HSUS and your local shelter, they are always in need. Me & my life-long best buddy Sam, were thrown away at the age of 7 1/2 until our Mom adopted us together almost 2 1/2 years ago. We know how much your support is needed!

There are other companies besides Menu Foods that have products relating to the recall. Some are: Del Monte - Several Products, Purina Prime Cuts & Gravy, Hills Science Diet Feline MD, Sunshine Mills - Several Products, Nutro Products - Several, etc. The recall includes name brand items as well as store brand, there were even some jerkey strips and other treats. Check the web sites of Menu Foods, ASPCA, HSUS, etc. for full lists of these products and individual brands. There have been recent additions! If your pet does not appear to be feeling well and your not sure about a food item that they may have consumed, have them checked to be on the safe side.

They have found melamine in some of the Natural Balance products that contain the rice protein and the list seems to keep growing! There are many more pet deaths than the ones that are being officially reported, as well as many pet emergencies. Once again, if you're not sure about something, check it out!

Calls should have been made to the various buildings, so many could have had the option to put themselves in a lockdown of sorts. Especially with a killer on the loose for so long. Some students in the first building, reported barricading doors after hearing gunshots. This is what saved a group when the shooter couldn't open their classroom door. I'm sure this will shed a light on standards for lockdowns, notification procedures, as well as deeply troubled individuals being allowed to remain in places that put others at risk.
This is just my opinion, I'm only a very cute Black Lab though!

Keep checking for updates (name brand & store brand , good website sources are: FDA, AVMA, ASPCA, HSUS, Etc. Many groups are recommending that you should not use products containing wheat gluten or rice protein. Or, at the very least, contact your pet food or treat manufacturer to find out the country of orgin of any protein concentrates used in their products.
There are still tons of unaffected products out there for you to choose from, don't try a homemade diet without doing the proper research! Seek medical care immediately if your pet has signs of poor appetite, constant thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy. Although these signs can be related to many conditions, they are still abnormal and should be checked out if your pet does not improve quickly!

lisasatticarttreasures ( 616) View seller's items | View BlogI am going to hijack my dog's blog for a moment to talk about the Miles Levin story as featured on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360. I meant to watch the midnight recorded version but dozed off & caught it in my headline mail this morning. It was such a touching story that I found myself reading his blog at www.carepages.com. I have lost both of my dads to cancer a short while ago, as well as my Precious Cat Kid "Tiger" this past Tuesday. I didn't have to read much to realize that this young man, in spite of his age, reminded me of my dad (step-dad)! Miles is what my dad was, everything that hero's are made of and then some. Thankful for every breath of every moment and the chance for more! Not sweating the small stuff, crying over spilt milk, and so on. Putting others before themselves, all the while being happy to do so. Never complaining of the pain or weakness from treatments but seeing it as a chance for more life. If the world had more people like my dad & Miles, it would be a better place by far! If Miles' story changes the priorities of even a few, it will be a great thing!
I will forever miss my dad (my biological dad as well), he made a difference in my life and he was the greatest role model for my oldest son who was his best buddy. My youngest son only knew him for a year which is sad. It would seem that Miles' story is making a difference in many lives, you can see that by his posts. It is not all of the "things" that you have that matter in the end, they will not be remembered. You will be remembered for how you touched someones life, (a child, a family member, a friend, a pet, or even a stranger. Please visit Miles' blog to wish him well, share your stories, send a blessing, whatever you wish as he seems to enjoy it all. My only advice would be, if you care about someone, love someone (people & pets), respect someone - Find a way to Tell Them In Some Way because you just never know!

Keep your kids & dogs cool when they are outside with a hose mister! Just hang from tree to tree, post to post, along fence line, etc. Available at your garden center or a Wally World!!!
Don't forget frozen water bottles for your rabbits, place along their body. Rabbits can withstand cold better than heat! Better yet, provide a run instead of a hutch so they can naturally burrow. Rabbits in room size runs (with a shelter house) are more comfortable & lovable, not zombie-like!

Also, bleach and paper towels, as well as cleaning supplies are some things that most people do not think to bring in. Save those old collars, leashes, pet food bowls, towels, etc. and bring them in as well - they are Always needed!
If you have any old supplies for small animals such as for rabbits, rodents, birds, etc. bring them in as well. At any givin time, the shelter is home to a wide range of animals, big and small. Call your local shelter to see what they are in need of most!
Adopt from a shelter or rescue & Save A Life!!!

lisasatticarttreasures ( 616) View seller's items | View BlogContact the DA and request that state-level charges be filed regarding Michael Vick as he may be getting off too easy at the federal level (although the judge is a dog lover and we will see if he imposes a more harsh penalty) and we need to send a clear message to people involved in this type of activity. Violence toward animals almost always leads to violence toward children, women, etc. Vick did not need the money that he was bringing in with this venture as the ring leader of Bad Newz Kennels, which makes this even more sinister!

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup pumpkin, canned or fresh puree
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 tablespoons regular shortening
1 whole egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg - then cut in shortening. Beat egg with milk and pumpkin puree, then combine with flour mixture. Stir until soft dough forms, mixing well. Drop by tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool and serve to your deserving dogs, only a couple a day though as we have to watch our mid-sections. Safe for our humans as well, Bake Some Today!!!

Vick stated that he is sorry, that he rejects dog fighting, and that he found Jesus. Funny how they all of a sudden Find Jesus when they are in trouble!!! ASPCA is leading a team of experts in evaluating the many dogs taken from Vick's property. It is expected that most, if not all, of the dogs will lose their lives due to their horrific upbringing in the world of dog fighting.
Do Us Dogs A Favor, If You See ANY Evidence Of This Type Of Activity In Your Area or Any Area, Report It To The Authorities, as well as your local Humane Society, HSUS, American Humane Society, ASPCA - report it to everyone until something is done about it!

Who knew it would end like this: his pet dog, Otis, munching on the once-cherished ball until it popped, its slobbery remnants hawked on eBay.

But that's just what has happened in the aftermath of Vick's guilty plea to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge. Tyler ultimately chose man's best friend over his once favorite sports star.
"From the beginning, it was his choice as to what he wanted to do with it," his father Chris Reab told CNN.com. "I commend him."

"Get it, get it," Tyler says in the video, as he and his uncle laugh with glee.
Otis eventually chews it so hard the ball deflates.
Cripe says he gave the ball to his nephew as a Christmas present. It came in a clear case and it soon became the boy's "prized possession." Tyler, now 13, often used Windex to buff up the case, giving it a spit-clean shine.
But after the recent turn of events with Vick, the boy decided to get rid of it. After all, everyone in the Reab house loves animals and there was no place for Vick anymore, his dad said.
The chewed-up football is selling on eBay with a starting bid of 99 cents. The family has pledged to donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the Oregon Humane Society and Hope for Kids Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to protect Oregon's after-school programs.
"I'm really proud of him," the father said of his son.

Attorney’s office revealed that Dr. Melinda Merck, ASPCA Forensic Veterinarian, participated in the excavation of graves and the examination of canine remains found on Vick’s Virginia property. Now the ASPCA has a new challenge to face—leading a team of behaviorists in evaluating pit bulls taken from Vick’s property during the course of the investigation.
Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, the ASPCA’s Science Advisor and Executive Vice President, National Programs, will head up the team that will conduct the evaluations. San Francisco-based BAD RAP (Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pit Bulls), a nonprofit educational resource for pit bull parents and handlers, will be working with the evaluation team to help identify which dogs are eligible for foster programs and possible rehoming into appropropriate foster homes.
Other options for the rescued pit bulls may include rehabilitation as law enforcement dogs, placement in sanctuaries or, if there is no other choice, humane euthanasia. The ASPCA-led team will provide a report to the USDA; the final disposition of the dogs, however, will be decided by a federal judge. During the evaluation process, the dogs will remain in the federal government’s possession. At no time will the ASPCA take possession of them.
“We greatly appreciate the trust placed in us by the USDA to ensure that these dogs are given every possibility for a second chance,” says Ed Sayres, ASPCA President & CEO. “We take this phase of the investigation very seriously. Fighting dogs face many challenges when considered for rehabilitation or placement, and we’ll make sure they get the professional, thorough and detailed evaluations they deserve.”

On Saturday, September 15, at the Walworth County Fair Grounds in Wisconsin an eclectic group of musicians from around the country will gather to perform at the first ever Musical Horse Aid concert. The goal of the concert is to increase awareness of the plight of at-risk horses in the United States and to raise funds for the care, safety and rescue of these horses. The day-long event is being organized by Animal Fairy Charities, a Wisconsin-based animal protection organization.
The day's events include a special opening and closing tribute from the Wisconsin National Guard, speakers from nationally recognized horse protection groups, and a diverse mix of musical acts, spanning the gamut from country to rock and folk. Full details of the event can be found here (HSUS).
A representative from The HSUS will be on hand to talk about our latest victories in the fight to permanently end horse slaughter in the United States and give a special update about the Miracle Horses The HSUS rescued from the jaws of death at the Cavel slaughterhouse earlier this year. All proceeds from the event will benefit The HSUS and other horse protection organizations, such as Habitat for Horses and Thoroughbred Charities of America.

This year, close to 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with cancer and about 560,000 people will die from cancer in the United States--more than 1,500 per day or one of every four deaths. The Cancer Screening, Treatment, and Survivorship Act of 2007 is a bold expansion of access to early detection and corresponding early treatment and survivorship services that once enacted will reduce cancer mortality rates, improve quality of life for those diagnosed, and save health care dollars.
