Top ASPCA Stories Of The Week!

**~1~**ASPCA Rescues 33 Poodles from Queens Hoarders:
Last Thursday, October 23, the ASPCA took custody of 33 miniature poodles who belonged to an elderly couple in Queens, New York. Acknowledging that they are no longer able to adequately care for the dogs, themselves and their home, the couple willingly relinquished all but one of their dogs to the ASPCA so they could receive the individual attention and veterinary care they deserve. The dog they chose to keep will be spayed.

The ASPCA was alerted to the hoarding situation by a case worker from a social services agency who was concerned about the number and condition of animals in the home. She did not know who to call or how to help the animals until she read about animal hoarding on the ASPCA’s website, at which point she contacted the ASPCA and asked for a site assessment to be conducted.

“We were fortunate to be able to accommodate such an influx,” says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President, ASPCA Adoption Center & Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics. “The longer an agency waits to act, the more animals there will be and the worse their condition. Getting them to a shelter as soon as possible gives them the best chance for placement in new homes. In this case, the ASPCA was able to stop the population from exploding further.”

The 33 surrendered poodles, who range in age from two months to six years, had never been walked outside and are not well-socialized to strangers and new environments. While they are all timid and fearful, the majority of the dogs are in relatively good health. After being evaluated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and groomed, most of the puppies and healthy adults were placed in loving new homes this week. Those still available for adoption are “special needs” dogs who must be placed in quiet homes with parents who are willing to work with their ongoing medical and behavioral requirements.

For more information about adopting a poodle, please call the ASPCA at (212) 876-7700, ext. 3210.

**~2~**ASPCA Vets Give Life-Saving Blood Transfusions to Spunky the Cat
Earlier this month, Spunky—a petite adult cat with electric green eyes—arrived at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital (BMAH) in dire straits. He had a case of life-threatening anemia; his red blood cell count was perilously low. The culprit? A diminutive, often underestimated insect—the flea.

Spunky was severely infested with the tiny, leaping parasites that thrive in humid environments and feed on the blood of cats and dogs. Fleas can consume 15 times their own body weight and cause a significant amount of blood loss in their furry hosts. Over time, this blood loss can lead to a medical emergency like the one facing Spunky, who needed immediate blood transfusions. Thanks to the ASPCA’s fully stocked feline blood bank, this ailing kitty received two transfusions, which helped restore his red blood cells to healthy levels.

Since 2004, Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital has sponsored a feline donor program to ensure a dependable supply of blood for weekly transfusions like Spunky’s. Last year the hospital administered transfusions for 183 cats and dogs. While most animal hospitals depend on commercial blood banks, the ASPCA recruits kitty donors to maintain its own thoroughly vetted supply. According to Michelle Falcon, Senior Administrator to the Director of Medicine and founder of the ASPCA’s feline donor program, approximately six to 12 cats give blood up to several times each year.

“When a client expresses interest, we check to see if the animal meets certain requirements,” Falcon says. “A cat must be healthy, between the ages of one and eight and weigh at least ten pounds.” At present the hospital’s donor program only includes cats. Since dogs are routinely exposed to infectious agents outdoors, it’s much more expensive to maintain a healthy supply of canine blood. For its doggie needs, the ASPCA still purchases blood from a larger commercial bank.

Spunky has recovered from his brave battle of the bug, and no doubt, owes his life in part to the attentive vets at the ASPCA. But more than an ounce of gratitude is also due to the many selfless cats who’ve donated blood to save their feline brothers and sisters.

For more information about the ASPCA’s feline donor program or to volunteer your kitty’s services, please contact Michelle Falcon at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4324.

Rescued Ratchet Is On His Way Home ~ From Iraq!!!

(CNN) -- An animal rescue group on Sunday picked up a U.S. soldier's adopted dog from Iraq, ending the soldier's weeks-long struggle to send the animal to her Minnesota home.

Sgt. Gwen Beberg adopted Ratchet after soldiers rescued him from a burning pile of trash in May.

Operation Baghdad Pups, which said the U.S. military prevented its first attempt to take Ratchet the dog on October 1, picked up the animal in Baghdad with military clearance and flew it to Kuwait on Sunday.

The dog is expected to be flown to Washington on Monday, and if a veterinarian determines it is healthy, sent to Sgt. Gwen Beberg's home state on Wednesday, Baghdad Pups publicist Larry Garrison said.

Beberg, who adopted the dog after soldiers rescued it from a burning trash pile in May, tried to have the group fly Ratchet to the United States on October 1 as her deployment neared an end.

But the military, which prohibits soldiers from adopting pets abroad and bringing them to the United States, confiscated the animal after Beberg put it on a convoy bound for Baghdad Airport, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which runs OBP.

Ratchet and Beberg, 28, drew the attention of thousands of people who signed two online petitions -- linked through the SPCA's Web site -- urging the military to let Ratchet go to the United States.

The military cleared OBP to take Ratchet on Wednesday, but not in time for the group's flight from Baghdad that day, the SPCA said.

Iraqi dog's journey to America hits another snag
On Sunday, private security contractors took Ratchet from a base to the airport, where OBP -- which works with soldiers to help them bring adopted animals home -- put Ratchet on the charter flight to Kuwait, Garrison said.

Northwest Airlines will donate the flights from Kuwait to Minnesota, Garrison said.

The SPCA said Ratchet helped Beberg deal with her Iraq deployment, which started in September 2007 and is scheduled to end in November.

"She was absolutely miserable in the war and was really struggling to keep going every day. Ratchet turned it around for her," SPCA spokeswoman Stephanie Scroggs said last week.

Beberg's mother, Patricia Beberg, in a statement released by the SPCA, said Ratchet "was the savior of her [daughter's] sanity" in Iraq.

SPCA representatives said the military euthanizes some animals that it confiscates, and that Gwen Beberg worried that Ratchet would be killed.

Beberg was thrilled to hear last week that the military would let OBP take Ratchet, the SPCA said.

"Your persistence and amazing work has astonished me throughout this whole thing," Gwen Beberg said in an e-mail to the SPCA, according to the society.

Scroggs said one of Beberg's friends helped spread the news about Ratchet through blogs. One of the petitions, which had more than 65,000 signatures as of Sunday night, was started by a blogger, Scroggs said.

The SPCA says although active-duty soldiers aren't allowed to adopt animals in the Middle East, many soldiers befriend animals in the course of their service there.

Garrison said the program relies on donations, saying it generally costs $3,000 to $4,000 to bring a servicemember's animal to the United States.

"This isn't a one-time story This is a program making a difference for our soldiers," Garrison said.

Colin Powell ~ Highly Respected Republican General & Bush's 1st Term Secretary Of State ~ Endorses OBAMA!!!

(CNN) -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama, citing the Democrat's "ability to inspire" and the "inclusive nature of his campaign."

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says he is voting for Barack Obama.

"I think he is a transformational figure, he is a new generation coming onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I'll be voting for Sen. Barack Obama," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Powell said he was concerned about what he characterized as a recent negative turn of Republican candidate Sen. John McCain's campaign, such as the campaign's attempts to tie Obama to former 1960s radical Bill Ayers.

"I think that's inappropriate. I understand what politics is about -- I know how you can go after one another, and that's good. But I think this goes too far, and I think it has made the McCain campaign look a little narrow. It's not what the American people are looking for," he said.

Powell, a retired U.S. general and a Republican, was once seen as a possible presidential candidate himself.

Powell said he has some concerns about the direction of the Republican Party, adding that it has "moved more to the right than I would like to see it." Read a transcript of Powell's remarks

In regard to the financial crisis, which Powell called the candidates' "final exam," Powell said McCain appeared unsteady in dealing with it, while Obama had excelled in handling the situation.

"Obama displayed a steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge," Powell said. Watch what Powell says about Obama »

"He has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president," he said.

Obama praised Powell at a campaign event in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Sunday, calling him "a great soldier, a great statesman, and a great American."

"I have been honored to have the benefit of his wisdom and counsel from time to time over the last few years, but today, I am beyond honored and deeply humbled to have the support of General Colin Powell," Obama said.

Obama called Powell earlier Sunday and thanked him for his endorsement, communications director Robert Gibbs said.

In their 10-minute conversation, Obama said he looked forward to taking advantage of Powell's advice in the next two weeks and hopefully over the next four years, Gibbs said.

During the campaign, Powell has met with both candidates and said he has a lot of respect for McCain. He said Sunday that he thinks both candidates are qualified to be president.

"It isn't easy for me to disappoint Sen. McCain in the way that I have this morning, and I regret that," Powell said.

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, McCain said he respects and admires Powell, and the announcement "doesn't come as a surprise."

"I'm also very pleased to have the endorsement of four former secretaries of state -- Secretaries [Henry] Kissinger, [James] Baker, [Lawrence] Eagleburger, and [Alexander] Haig -- and I'm proud to have the endorsement of well over 200 retired Army generals and admirals," McCain said.

Powell served as Secretary of State under President Bush from 2001 to 2005.

The possibility of a Powell endorsement has been rumored for several months.

On August 13, Powell's office denied a report on Fox News by commentator Bill Kristol that Powell had decided to publicly back Obama at the Democratic National Convention.

Powell himself brushed off queries on any potential presidential nod but told ABC News in August that he would not be going to Denver, Colorado, for the convention.

Back in February, Powell told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that he was weighing an endorsement of a Democratic or independent candidate.

Powell has offered praise for Obama, calling him an "exciting person on the political stage."

"He has energized a lot of people in America," said Powell. "He has energized a lot of people around the world. And so I think he is worth listening to and seeing what he stands for."

The former general, who has largely steered clear of politics since leaving the Bush administration, noted that the next president will need to work to restore America's standing in the world.

Powell gave the keynote address at the Republican National Convention in support of George W. Bush in 2000.

Obama Wins Again!!! Does Anyone Know If Joe The Plumber Is Friends With Joe Six Pack?

4 For Obama / Biden ~ 0 For McCain / Palin! Once again McCain came off as bitter, angry, and showed a lack of self control while Obama came off as Calm, Cool, & Collected. Obama stuck mostly to the issues and was more than willing to offer an explaination after any number of personal attacks. McCain on the other hand, wanted to focus on personal attacks, fear promotion, and Joe the Plumber!
We have to keep in mind that McCain himself, just a few days ago, said that Obama is a decent family man and that Americans would not have to worry if he became President. Although he made these statements at one of his rallies where hate and fear promotion had come to a head, he still made the statements just the same!

In the next 19 days before the election, we will see if McCain and Palin stick to the issues that Americans want to hear about or if they keep up with the personal attacks and fear promotion which clearly has not worked for them. Either way, I will not vote for them and what they stand for and what they have turned their campaign into!!! I do respect McCain as a war hero and for his many years of public service though. As for Palin, she was put in as a tool because Obama didn't pick Clinton. McCain only met her once before picking her as his running mate, they are using her, sheltering her, and molding her!

I would never want to see Palin move into the main seat due to her lack of major experience & knowledge, her gross neglect of the environment, her lack of protection for animals and downright cruelty to wolves (promotion of aerial slaughter) to boost elk & moose population for trophy hunters, and due to the fact that her foreign policy experience amounts to the fact that she can see Russia from her house and keep an eye on Putin when he rears his ugly head! Need I say more!!!
